The Westboro Baptist Church is picking up their picket signs and heading to the nation’s capitol to visit Howard University this Friday to protest against the students they have dubbed “fornicating-selfish brats.” The Westboro Batptist Church (WBC) is a group of radical Christians who believe in radical protests to obtain radical change. They describes themselves as an old school church that “adheres to the teachings of the Bible, preach against all form of sin…, and insist that the sovereignty of God and the doctrines of grace be taught and expounded publicly to all men.” Better fittingly, Bossip describes WBC as an unaffiliated Baptist church known for its hateful speech against homosexual people, soldiers and anyone who draws breath.
WBC posted on their website godhatesfags.com (how Christian of them) about their reason for visiting The Mecca. Here is their post below:
WBC has not been as popular in the news as they’ve previously been, and they’re obviously trying to regain their spotlight. I’ve found myself pondering why they are choosing to go to Howard University out of all the other institutions of learning in the District of Columbia, but you can answer that question yourself.
I spoke with a few Howard students and their responses to WBC protesting on campus were consistent.
Erica Marshall, a Senior Television Production major, commented on their abandonment from God’s command to love one another:
Lets get one thing straight, God hates NO ONE. NO liar, cheater, fornicator, homosexual, thief, drunkard, pothead, or gossiper. He hates the SIN. As far as I’m concerned, I wouldn’t be counter-protesting a church if I went on campus that day, I’d be entertaining a hate group full of people who don’t know of God’s grace, mercy and UNCONDITIONAL love. – Erica Marshall
Phoebe Moore, a Freshman Legal Communications major, weighed in on their relevancy:
I don’t really have anything to say, because to me their causes aren’t relevant. As a Christian, I know the Lord taught me to love my neighbor, regardless of his color, gender, orientation, age or ideals, no matter how twisted those ideals may be. I’m not sure why the WBC is coming to Howard, but to me they’re only proving that they know how to exercise their right to protest to its fullest extent of the law. – Phoebe Moore
The comments from WBC against Howard University are rude and disrespectful, but what do you expect from a group that celebrates the death of USA soldiers; however, the big question is how is Howard going to respond. It has been circulating that a protest will occur against the protest. There has been a message sent out by one of the deans for the Chapel of Howard University concerning a counter-protest: Many of you are aware that Westboro Baptist Church is planning a protest on Howard’s campus this Friday, and that several students are planning a counter protest. Please help spread the word among any who are interested or concerned that a meeting will be held at 6pm Thursday in the Chapel in preparation for their visit.
Howard University is a school that boasts people from all around the world with different beliefs, but the Christian God and his mission are in no way forgotten on the campus. I could list all of the Christian activities and ministries that Howard has going on, but even if the University had none, it wouldn’t give WBC the right to spur out their ignorant, offensive and derogatory comments against the students of Howard.
Students of the university are upset, but they aren’t defeated. They aren’t going to give WBC what they desire, a negative response. The Westboro Baptist Church has been out of line for years. When the Westboro Baptist Church is looking at scriptures, I wonder if they ever read Mark 12:31 which says, “The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no greater commandment than these.” Do they ever glance at Ephesians 4:2 which commands, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” I contemplate if they ever stop by 1 John 4:8 which proclaims, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” My conclusion is that they must not because they consistently prove the first part of Proverbs 10:12 which says, “Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all wrong.”
God commands his people to love thy neighbor.
He never put any disclaimers on who not to love. The Westboro Baptist Church is a disgrace to the Christian community. Everyone doesn’t have to believe what you do. You don’t have to agree with everyone’s lifestyle, but that doesn’t give you permission to disrespect it. So go ahead and go to Howard University, so they can show you how people who know how to act, do.
Stay classy Bison.
