Pastor Shirley Caesar Has Taken Legal Action Against DJ Suede & Empire Records

The #UNameItChallenge swept the nation with a vengeance right before this year’s Thanksgiving. The challenge was unintentionally created by DJ Suede when he took Pastor Shirley Caesar’s “Hold My Mule” song and remixed it. With a fresh beat and a new spin, the song became the Thanksgiving menu rundown. Pastor Caesar initially seemed to be okay with the challenge; however, she’s now taking legal action against DJ Suede and Empire Records.

DJ Suede’s remix blew up on social media. On Facebook alone, the remix video garnered millions of views. He made an official video for the song on YouTube. And then he intentionally made the remix available for purchase on iTunes (for profit), but the remix was released illegally. Consent was not obtained from Pastor Caesar’s team, and that is where the big part of the problem lies.
