Officer Who Shot Philando Castile Acquitted of Manslaughter Charges

Officer Jeronimo Yanez of the St. Anthony Police Department was acquitted of all charges for the killing of Philando Castile today.

The jurors, 2 Black and the rest White, voted Yanez not guilty for second-degree manslaughter and two counts of intentional discharge of firearm that endangers safety.

Yanez shot Castile in the viral video uploaded by Castile’s girlfriend Lavish Reynolds. Reynolds streamed Castile’s death on Facebook Live. She explained that Castile was just reaching for his wallet when Yanez fired, but Yanez insisted then and in court that Castile was reaching for his firearm (he was licensed to carry).

His death caused national outrage, but like usual, the officer who’s caught on tape killing the Black man will face no punishment.
