Netflix has released the trailer for it’s forthcoming Black mother-son superhero series Raising Dion.
The series, based on a viral short and comic book by Dennis Liu, follows a mom trying to safely raise her son with superhero-like abilities after the death of her husband.
Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to Liu and Michael B. Jordan, who got attached to the project and helped turn it into a series, in 2017. Jordan has a supporting role in the film and will executive produce alongside Liu, Kenny Goodman, Kim Roth, Michael Green, Seith Mann, who also directed the pilot, Charles D. King’s Marco and the series showrunner Carol Barbee.
Here is the show’s official description: Raising Dion follows the story of Nicole (Alisha Wainwright), who she raises her son Dion (newcomer Ja’Siah Young) after the death of her husband, Mark (Jordan). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities. Nicole now must keep her son’s gifts secret, with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat (Jason Ritter), and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities.
The show has drawn some controversy and been accused of participating in colorism. The actors cast for the series are visibly lighter than the actors in the short and the depiction of the characters in the comic.
Some social users have pledged to not watch the series due to the casting, but many under the trailer are excited for the project.
Raising Dion premieres on Netflix on October 4th.
