Morehouse Commencement Speaker Robert F. Smith Announces His Family Will Pay Off Class of 2019’s Student Loans

The 2019 graduating class of Morehouse received the surprise of a lifetime when their commencement speaker, Billionaire Robert F. Smith, announced his family would paying off the entire’s class student loan debt.

“My family is going to create a grant to eliminate your student loans!” Smith said to graduates. “This is my class, and I know my class will pay this forward.”

According to AJC, the technology investor and philanthropist, who received an honorary doctorate at Morehouse College’s Sunday morning graduation exercises, had already announced a $1.5 million gift to the school.

His gift has been estimated at $40 million.
