Television maven Mara Brock Akil has inked a multi-year overall deal with Netflix to create new original content.

The deal comes ahead of her brainchild and cultural phenomenon Girlfriends arriving on the streamer September 11, marking the series’ 20th anniversary.

With her pen and creativity tracing back to the hit UPN series Moesha, Akil has proven that when discussing Black storytelling and innovation in television, her name cannot be left out of the conversation.

Helming over 400 episodes of TV, she is a shining star in development Netflix is lucky to work with.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mara Brock Akil to Netflix,” said Channing Dungey, VP Original Series, Netflix. “Her signature storytelling, authentic perspective and captivating characters have long entertained audiences and proven to be relevant, timely and endlessly engaging. We look forward to bringing her distinct voice, vision and passion to our global members.”

Akil, who from The Game to Love Is has proven her unique ability to intricately tell untold stories, says the partnership is a dream.

“It is a dream to partner with the force of Netflix, for we have the same goals—telling human stories for a global audience,” said Akil in a statement. “I’m excited to have a home that allows me the creative freedom and support to do what I do best– paint portraits and murals of women, Black people and anyone else whose story is missing from this golden age of television.”

She continued: “Representation matters and so does who you build with– I can’t wait to work closely with Channing Dungey and her team to launch some great stories.”

To keep the good times going, Akil will be hosting an Instagram Live Party at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET on Netflix’s @strongblacklead to commemorate Girlfriends’ 20th.

The live will include special guests, and we’re hoping that means our girls. Fingers crossed for it including an announcement about a Girlfriends movie or limited series returned.

Immediately following, the fun will transition to Twitter for a watch party of the first two episodes at 6 pm PT / 9 pm ET utilizing the hashtag #GirlfriendsOnNetflix.

Akil deserves all this celebration, love and creative opportunity. Congratulations Mara.
