Mahershala Ali won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for his role in Moonlight making him the fifth Black actor to win the award. The Los Angeles Times reported that he’s also the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.
“Regardless of theology, or however you see life, or relate to worshipping God — as an artist, my job is to tell the truth and then try to connect with these characters and people as honestly and deeply as possible,” Ali told the Los Angeles Times.
“I’m proud to own [being Muslim] and I embrace that. I just feel blessed to have had the opportunities that I have had.”
In a time where people are restricted from entering the United States because of their beliefs, it’s important to recognize firsts and achievements such as Ali’s.
