Justin Chambers Exits ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ His Last Episode Has Already Aired

Justin Chambers announced Friday that he’s exiting ABC’s long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy after 16 seasons.

Chambers’, who portrayed Dr. Alex Karev, last episode has reportedly air.

According to various sources, Chambers’ last episode was the series’ 350th episode in which Chambers’ character Karev helped Dr. Meredith Grey, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, save her medical license.

In the following episode, it’s mentioned that Karev returned home to care for his mother. There are currently no plans for a send-off episode.

“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers said in a statement to Deadline. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”

Chambers went on to thank ABC, the series creator Shonda Rhimes, his original cast members Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens and the rest of the Grey’s team.

“As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride,” he said.

With Chambers exit, Pompeo, Wilson and Pickens are the only original cast members left and Pompeo is the only one remaining from the original intern class.

If Grey’s fans know how to deal with anything, it’s loss. Chambers now joins a long list of actors who’ve exited the show. His character, which has grown to be a fan favorite over the years and had one of the best developments on the series, will undoubtedly leave a void on the show.

Grey’s is currently in the middle of a two season pickup, so the show will at least go until the end of season 17. There is nothing confirmed about how his character will exit, but it will likely be revealed in the series’ midseason premiere. We will certainly miss Justin Chambers.

Grey’s Anatomy returns January 23 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
