As if Shonda doesn’t mess with our emotions enough, ABC has ordered a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. The spinoff was given a straight to series order.
The untitled drama will revolve around a group of “heroic” firefighters. It will follow the brave group of men and women, from captain to newest recruit, as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock.
The characters for the show will be introduced in a season 14 episode of Grey’s, and the series is expected to premiere midseason.
ABC Entertainment Chief Channing Dungey has no doubts about the new series. “No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s’ signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff,” said Dungey.
This won’t be the show’s first spinoff. The hit show Private Practice revolved around Grey’s Anatomy character Addison Montgomery, portrayed by Kate Walsh, making a move to Los Angeles. The show ran for six seasons ending when Walsh was ready to move on.
According to Variety, the new ABC Studios/Shondaland drama will be spearheaded by Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Stacy McKee. Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers will exec produce with McKee.
