24-time Grammy winner Beyoncé has announced a new visual album written, directed and executive produced by the queen herself, Black Is King.
The film, based on the music from her 2019 LP The Lion King: The Gift, reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.
Beyoncé starred as Nala in Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King. She released her collaborative album The Gift ahead of The Lion King serving as an additional soundtrack for the seventh-highest ranking film of all time.
The project steeped in African influences across the diaspora features artists like Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Childish Gambino, Tekno and the young queen Blue Ivy.
According to a release, Black Is King will be an affirmation of a grand purpose with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. It will star some of the album’s featured artists and other special guests and include videos for “My Power,” “Mood 4 Eva” and “Brown Skin Girl”
It will premiere globally on Disney+ on July 31, 2020, arriving on the heels of the one-year anniversary of the release of Disney’s The Lion King.
