Barack and Michelle Obama to Headline Virtual Commencement Celebrations for Class of 2020

Former President Barack Obama and our Forever First Lady Michelle Obama are set to deliver virtual commencement speeches to the Class of 2020.

Barack Obama will share a commencement message in a televised hour-long primetime special celebrating high schoolers, Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020. 

Hosted by The LeBron James Family Foundation, The Entertainment Industry Foundation and XQ Institute, the celebration will also include LeBron James, Yara Shahidi, Lena Waithe, Pharrell Williams, H.E.R. and others.

ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC will air simultaneously across along with numerous other broadcasters and digital partners on May 16th at 8pm EST/PST.

“I’ve always loved joining commencement,” penned Barack Obama in a post. “Even if we can’t get together in person this year, Michelle and I are excited to celebrate the nationwide Class of 2020.”

Then a few weeks later Barack and Michelle Obama are joining together for a virtual commencement party.

According to Deadline, the Obamas will headline Dear Class of 2020, YouTube Originals’ virtual commencement event to celebrate graduates worldwide in partnership with Michelle’s Reach Higher Initiative.

BTS and Lady Gaga are also commencement speakers, with special appearances by Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Kerry Washington, Chloe x Halle and Zendaya, among others.

There will be a full hour of content to kick off the celebration and BTS and others will perform at a virtual afterparty.

“To the #Classof2020, I know how hard you all have worked to make it to graduation,” shared Michelle Obama on Instagram. ” Whether you’re graduating from high school, college, or any other kind of school––we want you, your family, and all of your loved ones to be a part of this celebration.”

Dear Class of 2020 will be streamed on the YouTube Originals channel and Learn@Home site. The full schedule of commencement events will be available on the Learn@Home site beginning on May 17.

The multi-hour event premieres Saturday, June 6 on YouTube.
