Viola Davis took the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26. With her win, she joined an elite class of actors who’ve won an Emmy, Oscar and Tony award.
She is also the first Black actor to win an Emmy, Oscar and Tony for acting. Whoopi Goldberg has also earned all three awards, but she earned her Tony for producing, not acting. Goldberg is also apart of the highly regarded EGOT club meaning she’s won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Davis gave an emotional acceptance speech thanking her parents, husband and daughter. She also gave insight on why she is an actor. “I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.”
