This Is Us is just coming for our tears. Phylicia Rashad, most known for her role as the loving (but not to be played with) mother Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has been cast to guest star in the series.
According to Entertainment Weekly, playing the role of Carol, mother of Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), Rashad will make her debut in the 13th episode of the NBC hit drama’s third season. The episode will finally explore Beth’s long awaited backstory.
“We had conversations with them telling the direction we were going in, what Beth was like in the past and what’s going to happen for her in the future, that type of thing,” Watson told TVLine.
“We have a really great new writer Eboni Freeman, [who is] the main writer on it, and some of it is her story, very personal to her. They found a way to create this really beautiful backstory, and a beginning of a resolution of Beth starting to get back on her footing again. And then we have some amazing surprises in it. It’s going to be a really powerful episode.
This will be some sorts of a full circle moment for Rashad and Watson, who are both Howard University alumnae. Watson revealed in January 2018 on Live with Kelly and Ryan that Rashad and Denzel Washington paid for her and roughly nine other Howard students to study Shakespeare at Oxford while she was in undergrad.
Now these two phenomenal actresses will be working together on one the best dramas of the decade. So get ready to grab your tissues, because Phylicia Rashad and Susan Kelechi Watson together are sure to bring some emotional distress.
This Is Us returns Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
